Hola! My name is Alejandro Orellana, and I am a double major in Business Administration and New Media Studies. My focus lies mostly within advertising and graphic design. Since I am a visually-oriented person, I strive to pick a cohesive theme and make professional-looking publications. I have had the amazing opportunity over the past few years to serve as a publicity representative and create print advertisements and websites in that style for several organizations. In the future, I plan to expand my knowledge of digital audio and video as well as photography.
From my classes at Alma College, I have learned that New Media Studies is much more than a hands-on approach to technology.Theory is a major part of understanding media and the direction it is heading, and it is very fascinating to learn how different approaches from different disciplinesaffect the way our culture interacts with modern technologies. What I really love about the major is the fact that I can analyze my favorite activities, like videogames and television. Instead of just playing a game, I can think about the reasons that game is important, why the developers and publishers made some decisions, and how all of these factors affect consumers and producers alike. In the end, I can formulate athoughtful and well-researched statement that I can present to support my viewpoint, and that is a cool way to go beyond a simple action.
After Alma College, I plan on going into the workforce and obtaining my Master’s in Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University. It’s a career choice that appeals to me because advertising and communication allow me to express my creativity in a structured environment. My ultimate goal would be to do some graphic design and planning for a major advertising firm, especially working for big name people and brands. Wouldn’t it be cool to be responsible for designing a cover for a major album or video game release? I would absolutely love to display my work on a national or even an international level.
